New Designs Unveiled for Welcome Center and Play Space in FDR Park

Fairmount Park Conservancy, the City of Philadelphia, elected officials, and the Friends of FDR Park will reveal new designs for FDR Park, soliciting community input on future usage, and announce significant city investment in this South Philadelphia treasure. Program will highlight the coming play space and Welcome Center at FDR Park with a speaking program and unveiling.

DETAILS: Fairmount Park Conservancy, the non-profit organization that brings Philadelphia parks to life, in partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Friends of FDR Park, recently began the implementation of the FDR Park Master Plan, a vision that offers a once-in-a generation opportunity to reimagine a historic Olmsted Park to serve 21st-century Philadelphians.

The Gateway Phase of the master plan will enhance the visitor experience by restoring and transforming the 5,500 square foot guardhouse at FDR Park’s Broad Street and Pattison Avenue entrance into a Welcome Center. The Welcome Center will include a courtyard with restrooms, a staffed information center, equipment rentals, food vendors, and co-working spaces for park staff and community partners. The Welcome Center will also transform the existing stables into a 4,000-square- foot cafe and 6,700-square-foot event space overlooking the Pattison Lagoon.

Adjacent to the Welcome Center will be a world-class destination play space that encourages nature play. Park-goers of all ages and abilities will be able to enjoy the playscape with rolling paths, climbing structures, log scrambles, and treehouses. A mega-swing set will provide a unique swing experience unlike any other in the city, overlooking the Pattison Lagoon.
